Mateo Gonzalez Montaño Copyright (c) 2025 Social Communication Journal https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://jcomsoc.ucb.edu.bo/a/article/view/1327 Sat, 12 Jul 2025 00:00:00 -0400 The Historical Evolution of Visual Communication in Two-Dimensional Media https://jcomsoc.ucb.edu.bo/a/article/view/1325
This article explores the historical evolution of visual communication in two-dimensional media, from prehistoric times to the emergence of graphic design as a profession in the twentieth century. Central to this analysis is the concept of format space as the foundation of visual composition. Since its origins in prehistoric art, format space has progressively established communicative functions that—beyond magical or religious purposes—constitute alternative forms of communication reflecting the development of civilization. The qualitative improvements in the use of format space have paralleled advancements in socio-political and economic organization, where its external boundaries symbolize territorial control, and its internal structure conveys an awareness of social hierarchies and relations of production.
Efraín Ortuño Copyright (c) 2025 Social Communication Journal https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://jcomsoc.ucb.edu.bo/a/article/view/1325 Sat, 12 Jul 2025 00:00:00 -0400 Chronology of Traditional Andean Music in Bolivia: 19th and 20th Centuries https://jcomsoc.ucb.edu.bo/a/article/view/1326
This article examines the role of music in the process of building the republican state in Bolivia, focusing on both labor and civic-military spaces. Based on historical documentary analysis, it shows how music fostered social cohesion, facilitated upward mobility for Indigenous-peasant groups, and was used as a tool of power by European expeditions, shaping the place of Indigenous people within the social order.
Isabel Gianina Sanjines Rodríguez, Gabriela Saravia Guardia Copyright (c) 2025 Social Communication Journal https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://jcomsoc.ucb.edu.bo/a/article/view/1326 Sat, 12 Jul 2025 00:00:00 -0400 My yala: female sexual liberation and perpetuation of the patriarchal order https://jcomsoc.ucb.edu.bo/a/article/view/1302
“You are my yala” for young people from La Paz Bolivia refers to someone with whom they had sexual relations, the use of this term and the speeches of some songs in recent years has created a social environment of apparent sexual freedom, this article seeks to demonstrate that this discourse exists alongside deep-rooted social stigmatization. A comprehensive field study was conducted, engaging young university students aged 17 to 26 in La Paz. The study showed that the capitalist system opportunistically takes advantage of the contradictions inherent in a discourse that simultaneously encourages and stigmatizes women for embracing open sexuality. It is evident that the capitalist system opportunistically leverages the contradictions inherent in a discourse that both encourages and stigmatizes women for embracing open sexuality. This paradoxical environment has, in turn, fostered the growth of a cultural market that serves to perpetuate the existing patriarchal order.
Claudio Rossell Arce Copyright (c) 2025 Social Communication Journal https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://jcomsoc.ucb.edu.bo/a/article/view/1302 Sat, 12 Jul 2025 00:00:00 -0400 To uphold human dignity https://jcomsoc.ucb.edu.bo/a/article/view/1323
During the celebrations marking the 59th anniversary of Universidad Católica Boliviana “San Pablo,” Monsignor Ricardo Centellas, Grand Chancellor of the University, addressed the academic community. Through surveys of 400 young adults (ages 18-25) in 2023, findings reveal that ethnic and political factors are closely intertwined in their perceptions, which reinforces polarization. Documentary analysis highlighted racism’s role in Bolivia, while quantitative data showed distinct electoral trends. Posttraditional communication practices were found to exacerbate societal divisions. The study concludes that ethnicity is a key factor shaping political attitudes in this demographic, offering insights into identity-driven polarization in higher education contexts.
Valentina Justiniano Calcina, Camila Wara Illanes Ramos, Octavio Miguel Blancourt Camacho, Rafael Antonio Loayza Bueno Copyright (c) 2025 Social Communication Journal https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://jcomsoc.ucb.edu.bo/a/article/view/1319 Sat, 12 Jul 2025 00:00:00 -0400 The Socio-Professional Identity of a University Psychology Professor in La Paz, Bolivia https://jcomsoc.ucb.edu.bo/a/article/view/1320
This research examines the construction of the socio-professional identity of psychologists, specifically focusing on the characteristics that define their identity as university professors. Employing a mixed-methods approach—combining quantitative and qualitative techniques—based on 20 questionnaires and 20 in-depth interviews, the study found that psychology professors define their professional identity around a set of clearly recognizable values. They express expectations to engage in research and publication, demonstrate the capacity for innovation, apply traditional methodologies, and adopt modern approaches through the use of technology. These findings suggest that their identities are in a state of transition—constantly evolving and adapting.
Following its destruction during the Indigenous siege led by Túpac Katari in 1781, the church was rebuilt in 1790, incorporating elements of Mestizo Baroque. This study examines the cultural syncretism embodied in the temple through the fusion of Indigenous traditions and European colonial architecture. The ET-PSET methodology developed by Verónica Solares was employed, alongside documentary research and ethnographic observation. Findings indicate that the restoration process not only recovered a physical structure but also reaffirmed Indigenous cultural identity, positioning the church as a locus of resistance and communal belonging.
Josefina Matas Musso Copyright (c) 2025 Social Communication Journal https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://jcomsoc.ucb.edu.bo/a/article/view/1322 Sat, 12 Jul 2025 00:00:00 -0400
